AL PACINO: LIFESTYLE AND BIOGRAPHY:

Alfredo James Pacino famous as Al Pacino, 80, born on April 25, 1940, in New York City neighborhood, East Harlem, is a well renowned and very famous actor and a filmmaker. He is one of the most popular actors in the Hollywood industry, who has been in Hollywood for over five decades now and has seen many achievements in his entire career. 

He received numerous awards and nominations including two Tony Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, an Academy Award, and AFI Life Achievement Award (honorary award), for his phenomenal work. 

Al Pacino’s Family:

Pacino did not have a very pleasant childhood as his parents, Salvatore Pacino and Rose Gerardi got divorced when he was only two years old, so he never got to experience that feeling of a complete family as he was growing up. After the divorce, Pacino moved with his mother to the Bronx, where his maternal grandparents, Kate and James Gerardi lived. His father moved to Covina, California due to his work.

Later on, when he was 22, Al Pacino lost his mother in 1962, and right after that he lost his grandfather too. Both raised him, and he was very close to them, and losing them was the darkest and saddest truth of his life.

Pacino’s Schooling And Education:

Al Pacino was not a very bright student and had little to no interest in studying. He was always interested in becoming a basketball player and his team used to call him “The Actor.” He was studying in Herman Ridder Junior High School, but due to his lack of interest in studies and his poor performance, he dropped all of his courses except English. 

Later on, he got selected in High School Of Performing Arts, which his mother was not very happy about and did not support his decision of studying acting. He didn’t care much and left his home as a sign of protest and continued studying in the same high school to pursue his career in acting. Pacino then joined HB Studio to study acting, and after devoting 4 years of his life over there, he finally got selected in the Actors Studio, after his first rejection when he was a teenager. 

Before joining this field, Al Pacino was involved in doing drugs like Marijuana only when he was 13 and two of his very close friends died due to drug abuse. He always used to get in trouble when he was in school and was often involved in many fights. People frequently used to call him a troublemaker.

Pacino was always passionate about acting, and he started working on it by joining HB Studio and the Actors Studio to learn acting from Charlie Laughton and Lee Strasberg. Theater/Stage Career:

1967:

Pacino started his stage career in 1967 and acted in Awake And Sing!, by Clifford Odets. He got his first salary as an actor when Al Pacino was working in this play, and it was around US$125 a week at that time. After that, he worked in America Hurrah, alongside Jill Clayburgh. He dated his co-actor Jill for five long years after this play.

1968:

After doing a couple of plays in Charles Playhouse in Boston, he made a powerful comeback at the Astor Palace Theater, where he acted in The Indian Wants The Bronx play. For his outstanding performance in this play, Pacino won an Obie Award for Best Actor. Later on, Martin Bergman, who was an American producer, saw Pacino’s plays and decided to become his personal manager.

Martin pushed Pacino to sign up for The Godfather, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon, which proved to be the best decision of his life as these movies became a huge success and earned him many awards. Pacino was very grateful to Martin and said in an interview that Bergman was the one who encouraged him to do these roles and if it wasn’t for him he wouldn’t have been able to do it, so Martin is one of a very few people behind his success.

Later on in November 1968, Pacino also appeared in an episode Deadly Circle of Violence of TV series NYPD, alongside Jill Clayburgh.

1969:

Pacino returned on February 25, 1969, in a Broadway show Does A Tiger Wear A Necktie?, for which he won a Tony Award in April, 1969. Later on, in the 1970s, he won another award for his role in The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel. Right after that, he appeared in American Buffalo, which was another huge success for Pacino and he received a nomination for a Drama Desk Award for it. His work didn’t stop there, he reappeared in Salome and Orphans, in 1990 and 2005.

1983:

Al Pacino along with his fellow actors and producers, Dustin Hoffman and Paul Newman, invested in The Mirror Theater Ltd, which was owned and founded by Lee Strasberg’s daughter-in-law, Sabra Jones. Pacino wanted to produce a play in collaboration with Mirror theater, but he couldn’t because there was enough cast for it at that time.

2002:

Later on, in October 2000, Al appeared in National Actors Theater and Complicite’s play, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. After that, he took a long break from stage acting and came back in 2010 in The Merchant of Venice, and got nominated for it by Tony Award for Best Leading Actor In a Play.

He also starred in a couple of Broadway shows including Glengarry Glen Ross (October, 2012-January, 2013) and China Doll (2015).

Pacino’s Film Career:

After investing years in the stage industry, Pacino started working in films in 1969. He got his first role in Me, Natalie!, which was not a huge role, but he still managed to gain some popularity from the little part he played in it.

Pacino gained a lot of successes and popularity in these years as well. In 2000, he received three Golden Globe awards and CecilB. Demille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures in 2001. 

He appeared in a number of hit movies in these years including Chinese Coffee (2000), Insomnia (2002), Simone (2002), People I know (2002), The Recruit (2003), Angels in America (2003), The Merchant of Venice (2004), Two for the Money (2005), Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), 88 Minutes (2007), and Righteous Kill (2008). 

Al’s work from 2010s include You Don’t Know Jack (2010), for which he received an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. After that he starred in Jack and Jill (2011) and received the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor. Pacino also received a National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2012.  

He continued working in other popular movies like Wilde Salome (2011), Phil Spector (2013), Danny Collins (2015), Paterno (2018), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), and The Irishman (2019). He received many nominations and awards in these years for these movies.

In the following year, 2020, Pacino’s TV series, Hunters was released and this is his second time doing a TV series after Angels in America (2003).

Al Pacino has been in relationships with different actresses, but he never married anyone of them. He dated Diane Keaton, Lyndal Hobbs, Kathleen Quinlan, Jill Clayburgh, Marthe Keller, Tuesday Weld, and Jill Clayburgh at different points of his life. His most serious relationship of all times was an Argentine actress, Lucila Polak, whom he dated for 10 long years (2008-2018), but he broke up with her as well since things didn’t pan out for him the way he wanted them to.

Al is a single father of three children. He has two daughters Julie Marie and Olivia Rose, and a son, Anton James, with his former ex-girlfriend Beverly D’Angelo, who’s an American Actress.
